Talking About Lacrosse Principles and Gear

Welcome to my site. My name is Bennett McCavanaugh. I would like to talk to you about the exciting sport of lacrosse. When I first picked up my lacrosse gear, I was confused about how the game would work. In particular, I was unsure about what my role on the field would be exactly. Luckily, I was able to watch a few games and see how the players interacted. My coach also helped us learn about our roles on the field. I would like to use this site to talk about the different ways lacrosse players use the field and their gear. Please visit often to learn all you can about this fun sport.

3 Tips For Keeping Your Children Safe Before Buying A Gun

by Julia Hart

If you have decided to purchase a gun for your home from a place like Wilcox Bait & Tackle, you may worry about having the firearm around your children. If so, use the following tips for teaching your children about guns to ensure their safety before you buy and bring the gun into your house.

Talk to Your Children About Basic Gun Safety

Do not try to hide the fact that there will be a gun in the house. Although you may feel as though it is safe that they do not know about the firearm, the result could be catastrophic. If one of your children finds the gun unexpectedly, they will not know how to safely handle it or be aware of the rules. They could end up shooting themselves or someone else.

Instead, sit down with your children and talk to them about guns. Let them know that you will be buying a gun and keeping it in the house. Go over some basic safety rules, such as not handling the gun, assuming it is always loaded, and telling you if they see the gun out. Use language appropriate for their age level to express the dangers of playing with the gun.

Have several conversations with your children to reinforce the rules. Then, plan on showing them the gun after you have purchased it. Since children are curious, they may want to see the firearm. Showing it to them with you guiding the situation helps curb their curiosity and decreases the chances of them seeking out the firearm to investigate it on their own.

Test Your Children with a Fake Gun

Another way you can reinforce the rules of not touching the firearm is to test your children before you buy it by placing a fake gun in your house. Do not tell them you have not purchased the gun yet, and hide the fake firearm some place where you know they will look.

According to the rules, your children should leave the gun alone and tell you that the gun is out. However, if you find that they are playing with the fake gun, you know that further teaching is needed before you bring the real one into your house.

Consider Enrolling Them in a Gun Safety Course for Children

Before you purchase your firearm, consider enrolling your children in a gun safety course that is designed for children. You can speak with a gun sales representative at the store from which you plan on purchasing your firearm for recommendations. They may even have a short class geared towards children to teach about how to stay safe around guns.

When selecting safety courses, ask about the age ranges of children to whom they cater. Some places offer age-appropriate classes for varying groups.

Also, when asking about courses for older children, ask if the instructor allows the children to handle firearms during the classes. Some gun safety classes end with teaching a child how to shoot.

Depending on your children's ages, as well as your desire for them to learn, you may or may not want them to shoot a gun. If you do not want them to learn how to handle and fire a gun, you may want to find a course that only teaches about safety.

Teaching your children about guns and keeping open communication with them about staying safe around firearms before you buy one can help ensure that they will not play with and possibly hurt themselves or anyone else. If you have any further questions or concerns, ask a representative at the sporting goods store from which you will be buying your gun to seek their advice, as well as discuss accessory options to keep the gun safely locked away.
